Scope Documents You Need

Where you draw the line between what you are doing and what you are definitely not fucking doing. Most scope creep happens because you never made it clear what was out of scope.

📋

The 6 Parts of a Bulletproof Scope

What goes in each section and why it matters

📄

Ready Templates

7 complete scope documents by project type

01

Project Overview

Foundation

Why You Need This

One paragraph that keeps everyone aligned on what the project is. Without it, the client thinks they hired you for X when you thought you were doing Y. This stops "I thought you were doing that" before it starts.

What Goes Here

What the project is and what problem it solves. Not deliverables. Big picture only. Project type, end goal, who it is for. Three sentences max.

02

Deliverables

Critical Protection

Why You Need This

This lists exactly what the client gets. Not what you do. What they receive. If it is not on this list, they do not get it. Your defense against "while you are at it" requests. Vague deliverables create expensive problems.

What Goes Here

Numbered list of everything the client receives. Be specific about quantities, formats, specs. Not "logo" but "three logo concepts, one refined, final files as PNG, JPG, SVG." Include file formats, how many rounds, dimensions.

03

Exclusions

Critical Protection

Why You Need This

The "not included" list that kills client assumptions before they become arguments. Clients assume a lot. They assume copywriting is included. They assume unlimited revisions. This section exists to kill those assumptions in writing.

What Goes Here

Everything clients assume is included but is not. Common exclusions: source files, additional formats, copywriting, photography, print production, extra meetings, extra revisions, rush delivery, implementation, training, ongoing support. The longer this list, the better.

04

Timeline & Milestones

Deadline Protection

Why You Need This

Tells the client when they get their stuff and makes it clear that their delays push everything back. Protects you from clients who disappear for two weeks then complain the project is behind. Their delays are their problem.

What Goes Here

Project phases with delivery dates or durations. What happens each phase and what you need from the client. Always include language that timeline depends on client providing feedback on time. Use date ranges or "X days after approval" if start date is not locked.

05

Client Responsibilities

Critical Protection

Why You Need This

The list of things the client has to do. Most projects fail because the client did not do their part. This section makes it their job to do their job. When the project is delayed because they did not send the thing, you point here.

What Goes Here

Everything the client needs to provide or do. Be specific with timing. Not "provide feedback" but "provide consolidated feedback within 5 business days." List materials, access credentials, decisions, approvals. The more specific, the less room for them to blame you.

06

Approval Process

Revision Protection

Why You Need This

Defines how approvals work so clients cannot claim they never approved something or want to redo finished work for free. Sets revision rounds, review deadlines, what happens if they do not respond. Makes approvals binding.

What Goes Here

Number of revision rounds, how long to review, feedback format, what happens if no response, what happens if they want changes after approval. Distinguish revisions (changes to unapproved work) from change requests (changes to approved work). Change requests cost extra.
